Renovation grants in France: a guide for expat homeowners

You can claim French renovation grants too

If you own a home in France, you are generally eligible for the same energy-renovation grants as French residents — regardless of your nationality. The main schemes are MaPrimeRénov', the CEE bonus and the interest-free Éco-PTZ loan.

The three main schemes

• MaPrimeRénov' — a state grant based on your household income band and the works. Paid after the works, on presentation of the RGE invoice.
• CEE (Energy Savings Certificates) — a separate subsidy paid by energy suppliers (EDF, Engie, TotalEnergies…), stackable with MaPrimeRénov'.
• Éco-PTZ — a zero-interest loan to cover the remaining cost.

Two golden rules

1. Use an RGE-certified contractor. Without RGE certification, no grant is possible — no exceptions.
2. Apply before you sign the quote or start the works. Starting first forfeits the grant.

The September 2026 reform

From 1 September 2026, several "single-gesture" works (wall insulation, windows, pellet boilers, double-flow ventilation) can no longer be funded on their own — they must be part of a whole-home renovation (the accompanied pathway), which targets at least a 2-class DPE improvement.
